Utimaco Launches Two Data Centers in Brazil

Bringing secure, scalable cybersecurity solutions closer to organizations across South America.

Brazilian and South American organizations are increasingly turning to cloud services to gain greater agility, scalability and operational efficiency across critical areas, including secure payments, data protection and key management. As more business-critical services move to cloud environments, the infrastructure supporting them must deliver the security, resilience and performance these workloads demand.

At the same time, organizations need flexibility in how they deploy critical systems. While some applications are moving to cloud environments, others will continue to operate on dedicated or on-premises infrastructure. Hybrid deployment is therefore becoming an increasingly important part of a broader cloud strategy, particularly for regulated and security-sensitive organizations.

To support this transition, Utimaco is launching two new data centers in São Paulo, Brazil. The facilities will provide local access to Payment HSM as a Service and General Purpose HSM as a Service, serving customers in Brazil and across South America.

This strategic infrastructure investment brings Utimaco’s cloud-based cryptographic services closer to customers in the region, helping to reduce latency for critical transactions, support local regulatory and operational requirements, and provide the scalability, flexibility and cost-efficiency associated with a managed service model.

Supporting Critical Processes

The new facilities will primarily serve the financial services sector, including banks, payment processors, fintechs, acquirers, issuers and other regulated payment organizations. They can also support organizations in government, telecommunications, healthcare and other sectors with high-assurance cryptographic and key-management requirements.

The data centers will host two services from Utimaco’s Trust as a Service portfolio:

  • Payment HSM as a Service provides managed cryptographic infrastructure for critical payment functions including real-time payments, card processing, PIN operations and transaction authentication.
  • General Purpose HSM as a Service provides secure key generation, storage and cryptographic processing for applications including digital identity, encryption, data protection, public key infrastructure and enterprise key management.

Both services are fully managed by Utimaco and designed to enable customers to deploy cryptographic capacity quickly, scale as requirements grow and avoid the operational complexity of managing HSM infrastructure themselves.

Core Pillars of a Security-First Data Center

Operating cryptographic services for critical and regulated workloads requires more than simply hosting HSMs in a data center. The underlying environment must provide the availability, resilience, certification and physical protection necessary to support highly sensitive operations.

Key Characteristics of the New São Paulo Deployment Include:

High Availability

Cryptographic services supporting payments and critical applications must remain continuously available. The two facilities are designed with resilient power and connectivity and form part of an architecture designed to support 99.999% service availability

Geographic Redundancy

Operating across two geographically separate data centers reduces dependence on a single location and helps maintain service continuity should one facility become unavailable.

Certified Operations

The services are designed and operated in line with established security and payment standards, including requirements associated with PCI PIN, PCI DSS and ISO 27001, helping customers support demanding regulatory and compliance obligations.

Robust Physical Security

The cryptographic hardware and keys used to protect critical transactions require stringent physical and operational controls. The facilities incorporate layered physical security and controlled access, including operational processes that support dual-control and separation of duty requirements for sensitive activities.

Strategic Benefits for Customers

Locating HSM services closer to customer applications can significantly improve responsiveness and reduce network latency, which is particularly important for banking, payment processing and other real-time financial services.

The combination of local infrastructure and cloud-based Payment HSM and General Purpose HSM services also enables customers to reduce the complexity and capital investment associated with purchasing, operating and refreshing physical HSM estates. Utimaco’s Brazilian data centers are launched in cooperation with IBM whose cloud customers can access Payment HSM and General Purpose HSM as a Service thanks to the existing integration.

Under the managed-service model, Utimaco takes responsibility for the underlying HSM infrastructure, including hardware lifecycle management, availability, monitoring and maintenance, while customers retain control over their cryptographic keys and key-management policies.

This allows organizations to focus on their applications and services rather than the operational burden of maintaining specialist cryptographic infrastructure.

A Strategic Milestone for South America

The launch of two São Paulo data centers represents an important milestone in Utimaco’s expansion of Trust as a Service in South America.

By combining local infrastructure, geographic redundancy and fully managed cryptographic services, the new facilities give organizations across Brazil and the wider South American region a way to strengthen resilience, reduce latency and simplify HSM operations without taking on the cost and complexity of managing physical infrastructure themselves.

Just as importantly, customers can adopt cloud and hybrid deployment models while maintaining the high levels of security, compliance, availability and cryptographic control required for critical and regulated workloads.

For financial institutions in particular, this creates a path to modernize cryptographic infrastructure while supporting the increasingly real-time nature of payment services and digital banking across Brazil.

Utimaco Trust as a Service

Utimaco’s Payment HSM as a Service and General Purpose HSM as a Service provide fully hosted, subscription-based access to enterprise-grade cryptographic infrastructure.

The services are designed for organizations that require the flexibility and scalability of cloud-based services while maintaining strong security, compliance and key-management requirements.

By moving responsibility for HSM infrastructure management to Utimaco, customers can reduce operational complexity, avoid periodic hardware refresh projects and deploy cryptographic services more quickly, while supporting compliance with demanding payment and information-security standards.

The new São Paulo deployment brings these capabilities closer to customers across Brazil and South America, providing a local foundation for the next generation of secure payments, digital services and cloud-based applications.
