About eIDAS
The eIDAS regulation, established in 2014, was a significant step towards creating a single market for digital services within the European Union (EU). The regulation aimed to provide a secure and reliable framework for electronic identification, authentication, and signatures, enabling citizens, businesses, and public administrations to conduct secure and seamless digital transactions across the EU.
eIDAS – EU Regulation on Electronic Identification and Trust Services
The eIDAS regulation has been revised – commonly referred to as eIDAS 2.0 - in 2024, aiming to further improve the functioning of the digital single market, enhance security and privacy, and facilitate cross-border electronic transactions. In addition to this, it introduces a uniform solution for digital identity credentials that are recognized across the EU: The European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet.
In general, the eIDAS regulation provides a set of specifications for:
- Digital identities
- Advanced electronic signatures
- Qualified electronic signatures
- Qualified digital certificates
- Qualified website authentication certificates
- Trust services
- European Union Trusted Lists
