Zum Abfangen des E-Mail-Verkehrs werden routinemäßig Netzwerksonden eingesetzt, die über Taps oder Switch-Span-Ports mit dem Kernnetz verbunden sind (passive Interception). Die Sonden überwachen den gesamten E-Mail-Verkehr des Dienstanbieters und leiten die abgefangenen E-Mails an das LIMS Mediation Device weiter.

Aktives Abfangen ist mit E-Mail-Servern möglich, die über integrierte Abhörfunktionen verfügen.
